Double Chin: often a matter of build

28.01.2026

The so-called “double chin” is the accumulation of fatty tissue in the submental region, the space between the chin and the neck. It is a very common cosmetic concern that affects the profile and tends to convey an impression of heaviness even in people of normal weight.

Its appearance depends on several factors: genetically programmed build and fat distribution; ›the bone structure of the chin; posture; and, with age, the progressive loosening of the skin and the platysma muscle of the neck. Frequently, then, a double chin is present even in people with no weight problem at all.

Why dieting isn’t always enough

Contrary to what is commonly believed, losing weight doesn’t always solve the problem: when the accumulation is constitutional and localized, it can persist even after significant weight loss. This is why many patients, despite following healthy lifestyles, see no change in this specific area.

Possible solutions

The most direct option, in cases where the skin is still firm, is liposuction of the submental region: it is performed under local anesthesia through a microincision hidden beneath the chin, lasts about thirty minutes, and requires wearing an elastic compression garment for a few days. Injectable treatments based on deoxycholic acid also exist, though they do not always deliver satisfactory results. When tissue laxity predominates instead, a small neck lift may be necessary.

Who it is suitable for

Selection, once again, is decisive: a young patient with elastic skin responds very well to liposuction, while in a more mature patient, with tissues already loosened, fat removal alone may not be enough, and the appropriate surgical option should be considered.

Before choosing a technique, then, it’s worth understanding the nature of the problem. Distinguishing a constitutional accumulation from simple excess weight is the step that guides everything else, and it deserves a dedicated evaluation.
